Description Satellite imaging systems are experiencing a revolution due to the fact that more and more computational power is becoming available. This allows the satellite onboard processing system to perform sophisticatd operations, including image generation and image analisys in order to provide early alarms related to dangerous phenomena such as fires, floods and so on. This announcement is for 1/2 theses with the objective of designing compression and encryption systems for next-generation satellites. The problem of compression is related to handling diverse types of image data within one single algorithm, i.e. image data and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data, developing an algorithm that can sustain very high throughputs and can be easily implemented in space-qualified hardware. At the same time, encryption is needed to protect the data from unauthorized access. The satellite scenario poses specific requirements to the key handling and encryption process, and the activity will study the use of conventional encryption techniques as well as the joint compression/encyption approach.

Required skills A background in ICT and C language programming. A background in data compression is desirable but not a prerequisite.
