Description The "Aether" communication system, developed in collaboration with Tierra Telematics, allows devices (whether mobile and fixed) located in environments that lack of WAN connectivity, to set up an ad hoc network, which exploits the movement of devices through the store-carry-and-forward communication paradigm, to allow data to be transparently propagated from one device to another. Such a network is called Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN), and is characterized by short-range communications between devices, unstable connections, variable topologies.
The thesis proposal focuses on the design of a protocol that allows the sharing of generic services among the devices (nodes) belonging to the Aether communication system. Nodes can offer services or request them. On each node, a Service Management daemon takes care of collecting/exporting/processing the known information about services offered by other nodes. A service (e.g. temperature measurements) may be available under certain conditions of stability/latency/freshness of the data. The Service Management module, on each node, can calculate these parameters, based on the known information (e.g. how often a particular node is visible? And more) and use them to better characterize existing services. The end applications that run on the nodes can query the Service Management module to obtain information about available services, and select the one that best suits their needs.
