Description Power-to-fuels pathways. The work deals with storage of energy coming from intermittent renewables (e.g., wind and photovoltaic). Electricity is converted into chemical energy through the production of a synthetic fuel via the reaction between hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). H2 is produced through water or steam electrolysis while CO2 can be obtained from industrial flue gases or biogas upgrading processes. The thesis may focus on several aspects of a power-to-fuel (P2F) process as: electrolysis, CO2 capture section and synthesis reactor modeling, process thermal integration, intermittent operation, dynamic behavior. P2F pathways can be analyzed from energy and economic standpoint, in order to compare the synthetic fuel cost with the market fossil fuel price.
