HUMAN BODY MODEL AND PASSIVE SAFETY OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES: DUMMY POSITIONING

Description Vehicle design is facing big changes and innovation due to the introduction of autonomous vehicles. The drive activity will deeply change because the driver will be able to decrease his attention and take non-conventional posture not allowed before. In case of impact, the consequences in terms of safety will be important. In these situations, the standard dummies used for the evaluation of impact consequences, show significant limitations.
The use of Finite Element (FE) simulations is more and more widespread to study the passive safety of vehicles. Today, the occupants injuries can be evaluate using FE models of human body (Human Body Models, HBM). In these models, all the body parts are modelled in detail. Using these instruments, the study of the injuries is much more accurate than using the traditional Anthropomorphic Test Dummies (ATDs). The ATDs can consider only conventional posture and allow the measure of few physical parameters.
The goal of the thesis is to study the passive safety of an autonomous vehicle, using a HBM.
In particular, the study is focused on the development and set-up of methodologies for the positioning og the HBMs inside the vehicles in non-conventional postures.
