Description In many areas such as mountains, countryside, ocean, or less-developed countries, neither broadband nor high-speed mobile networks are available yet. In these cases, the only available solution to offer high-speed connectivity is through satellite communication.
Satellite communication consists of a router that, by using a parable, exchange the customer's Internet traffic with a satellite. Then, the satellite retransmits all the traffic to a data centre that routes it on the Internet.
Given the communication complexity, the customers may experience unexpected lags. For troubleshooting the lags, both active and passive measurements have to be performed. However, due to the cost of transmission, only little active measurements can be performed. Furthermore, the high number of pieces of equipment crossed from the customer to the Internet make troubleshooting a complex task.

The main goal of the thesis will be to design a testbed performing active experiments on the customers' side while passively monitoring the performance on both the customers' and the data centre sides. The testbed will perform active experiments regarding different services such as video streaming, conference call, internet browsing, and bulk downloads. Secondary, the last part of the thesis may include the analysis of the collected data to create models of network traffic of specific classes with the help of analytics and machine learning techniques.

The testbed will be used to collect a dataset from a real satellite connection in cooperation with Skylogic, a satellite connection provider offering worldwide connectivity.
