Description The mission INCUS (Investigation of Convective Updrafts) is expected to launch in 2027 as part of NASA’s Earth Venture Program. The mission is based on a train of three radars at 35 GHz orbiting in the same orbital plane at a distance of about one minute and with a conical scanning microwave radiometer. By using an instrument simulator for both the radar and the radiometer developed in matlab code, we want to simulate the performances of the instrument in the measurement of convection. INCUS observations will be simulated using very high resolution regional meteorological model outputs that resolve convection. The simulations will be used to develop inversion algorithms for vertical velocities and mass and water vapor flows. Particular attention must be paid to the study of the effects of multiple scatering and the inhomogeneity of backscattering volumes. The research is also relevant for the study of the observations that will be made starting next year by Tomorrow.IO (https://satellitenewsnetwork.com/2021/09/21/tomorrow-io-orders-demo-satellites-for-rain -tracking-constellation /) for the improvement of short-term weather forecasting.

Required skills Excellent programming level in Matlab / python.
Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
Knowledge of weather and / or satellite orbits and / 0 radar and / or signal processing.
