Validation of precipitation and temperature products available on a European scale with ARPA Piemonte data

Reference persons ALBERTO VIGLIONE

Description The analysis is preparatory to the extension of the hydrological modeling developed in Piemonte to other regions of the Alps.
The validation of the products is made by referring to the Optimal Interpolation dataset and rain gauges of ARPA Piemonte (https://www.arpa.piemonte.it/rischinaturali/approfondimenti/clima/clima-piemonte and https: // www. arpa.piemonte.it/rischinaturali/tematismi/clima/confronti-storici/dati).
Precipitation and temperature products considered include interpolated data from ground measurements, reanalysis data and simulated data from regional climate models:
- E-OBS gridded dataset (https://www.ecad.eu/download/ensembles/ensembles.php);
- Euro CORDEX datasets (https://euro-cordex.net/);
- possibly others
The comparison with ARPA data is made on different statistics (eg, ETCCDI indices) and, in the case of interpolated and reanalysed data, also on the temporal correspondence of the events (to evaluate if and in which basins the products can be used for the classic calibration hydrological models).
The student's propensity / availability for programming is required. Grid data manipulation software (NetCDF, https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/index.html) such as CDO (Climate Data Operators, https: //code.mpimet) will be used. mpg.de/projects/cdo) and for statistical analyzes, alternatively, R, Julia, Python or Matlab.
