Description In the highly competitive panorama of the automotive industry, the development of new strategies for concurrent development of components is a key factor for success. Our chair has also been involved in the research of one of these new strategies: solution spaces [1]. It cascades high-level requirements to requirements for individual components to guarantee their crashworthiness, thanks to a mathematical method. We have already investigated the relationship between solution spaces and newly developed components by performing size optimization [2]. However, coupling solution spaces with topology optimization (TO) is still an unexplored field. TO [3] is a powerful tool addressing the task of determining optimal concept structures through changing the
material distribution in a given design domain. It has already demonstrated to be particularly useful in the prototyping phase of mechanical structures, however it needs much more investigation in the context of vehicle crashworthiness. Therefore, the goal of this project is to define a new topology optimization problem and find the best geometry for new crashworthy lightweight components, taking advantage of solution spaces.
Tasks
Literature review on solution spaces and topology optimization;
Getting familiar with the available tools (e.g.: Python, LS-Dyna);
Performing topology optimization to design a new crashworthy mechanical component.
