Descrizione The three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) is a photogrammetric technique that allows you to determine displacements and strains of a structure in three-dimensional space. 3D-DIC uses two synchronized cameras to acquire images of the structure of interest from two different views. In order to carry out the correlation between the images acquired with the two cameras, the 3D-DIC requires a pattern (eg: black dots on a white background) applied on the surface of the analyzed structure. However, the use of the pattern is not possible when large structures need to be analyzed.
The aim of this thesis is the development of a methodology to relate characteristics already present on the structure (eg. Oil stains, bolts, rust, etc.) and perform 3D-DIC measurements. The candidate will analyze the accuracy of different algorithms such as SURF and SIFT through a series of experiments to determine displacements and deformations applied on laboratory structures. The work offers the opportunity to test procedures developed on real systems such as bridges and wind turbines around the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus.
