From Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for the autonomous inspection of civil infrastructures (TUD)

Description The development of AI technologies has three stages, namely artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), and artificial super intelligence (ASI). ANI is less intelligent than humans and cannot completing eliminate human interventions. The next stage of development is AGI, where an artificial agent is as intelligent as a human operator and can therefore function independently without any human supervision. The final stage of development leads to ASI, where the artificial agent is more intelligent than a human being and can perform tasks that average humans cannot do.
The state-of-the-art methods for autonomous structural inspection are still constricted in the phase of ANI, where AI techniques are used to facilitate specific tasks such as defect detection, segmentation, and quantification.
This research aims at moving towards AGI, where an autonomous robotic system with human-like intelligence shall act as a human inspector in terms of exploring the environment, inspecting defects, collecting data and making intelligent decisions regarding the best follow-up actions all by itself.
