Description Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for approximately 17.9 million deaths per year or 32% of total annual deaths. Early diagnosis and treatment of CVD can drastically reduce the likelihood of premature mortality and ensure a normal life for those strongly related to Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV). Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) represents the speed of pressure wave propagation within arteries and is usually assessed between the carotid and femoral sites. Specifically, it is calculated as the ratio of the distance between the two sites to the time elapsed to travel that length. Nowadays, the former is assessed empirically with a dressmaker's tape measure, erroneously projecting the acquisition sites used into the air.
This thesis aims to automate this measurement: implementing an ultrasonic sensor, developing the signal processing algorithms, and, finally, integrating them into a previously developed device for estimating PWV.
