Description The positioning in an environment with no GNSS solutions (indoor) or poor GNSS solution (urban canyons) is a very current research topic that has not always definitive solutions.
The Geomatics group of the Politecnico di Torino, DIATI, collating with Italy TELECOM (JoL) developed an effective algorithm that allows to obtain the position in these difficult environments using images captured by smartphones and a special solid images of a pre-existing database interrogated by the Visual Search techniques.
The algorithm was studied, developed in MATLAB and tested in the field with excellent results even in complex environments (including for example one station of the Seoul Subway, South Korea). The main work is to convert the MATLAB code into the appropriate API libraries where they can be used by special APP developed for Android.
The study is part of a research collaborazioen between Politecnico di Torino, DIATI and ETRI (Electronic and Telecommunication Research Institute), a major research center in the South Korea.
