Description Ageing of existing buildings, material deterioration and safety assessment of existing buildings and structures is a major problem in the professional practice of civil engineers. In particular, no efficient and reliable methods exist for the determination of the quantity of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures. This determines highly invasive investigations and a very high degree of uncertainty. Existing non-invasive commercial systems are unable to provide reliable and useful results. The purpose of the thesis is to develop a new system, markedly different from the commercially available ones, that will allow for a precise and reliable determination of reinforcement. Starting from preliminary feasibility studies developed by the candidate, the new system will be based on magnetic tomography or on neural network systems or on other methodologies that may be individuated.
