Description Motivations:
Assistive technologies (ATs) aim at helping individuals with different types of disabilities, from cognitive problems to physical impairments.
When it comes to assist disabled people in enjoying TV programs, modern technology could enable different interesting scenarios and aids, but their diffusion is mostly very marginal and limited.
Goal of the thesis:
Creation of a portal to be integrated within a platform offering services to help disabled people enjoying TV shows and programs. The portal will consist of both software (e.g., mobile app, app for smart TV) and hardware (e.g., custom DVB-T and HDMI devices and interfaces) components.
Services offered include, but are not limited to, custom TV broadcast slowdown, real-time subtitles suitable for visually impaired and dyslexic people, audio descriptions for blind people, audio equalization and improvement for hearing impaired people.
The whole platform must be engineered, both on its software and hardware components, to maximize the user experience and its usability, even from heavily disabled people.
Outcome of the engineering phase should be a ready-to-market, inexpensive, prototype and demonstrator.
Learning outcomes:
The candidate will acquire a deep knowledge of multimedia content management and Assistive Technologies’ tools and products.

The research activities and the thesis are carried out in cooperation with:
- CINI National Lab on Assistive Technologies (http://www.consorzio-cini.it/index.php/it/lab-astech)
- “Centro Ricerche e Innovazione Tecnologica” (CRIT) of RAI in Turin.
Required skills Basic programming skills are required; past experience with FFMPEG is a plus but not a must.
