Optimization-based reconstruction of electromagnetic fields from UAV measurements

azienda Thesis in external company

Reference persons FABRIZIO DABBENE

Description The thesis is focused on the interpolation of the electromagnetic field without prior information on the radiating source using measurements acquired by UAV (drones). In the absence of information on the radiating source, the interpolation can be performed by solving a convex optimization problem, where we enforce both the matching with the acquired data and physical constraints of the field.
The main challenges of the thesis are:
a) implementation of iterative low-complexity algorithms to cope with large structures;
b) modeling and analysis of robustness against noise and errors;
c) extension of the method to cases where some additional information on the physical occupancy of the radiator is known.
The thesis will be carried out under the supervision of the staff of the Institute of Electronics, Computer and Telecommunication Engineering (IEIIT) of National Research Council of Italy (CNR), the Laboratory of Antennas and Electromagnetic Compatibility of Istituto Superiore Mario Boella and Prof. Giuseppe Vecchi of Politecnico di Torino (Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering).

Required skills Basic mathematical analysis, Convex Optimization, Basic coding skills (MATLAB is enough).

Notes Bibliography: The thesis is mainly based on the paper
"On the Interpolation of Electromagnetic Near Field Without Prior Knowledge of the Radiating Source" by
Benjamin Fuchs, Laurent Le Coq, and Marco Donald Migliore. Additional material will be provided to complete the background.
