Description Model-based GUI testing frameworks are a new generation of testing tools that leverage models of the user interface (that can be either manually defined, or automatically generated through a process called GUI Ripping) to automatically generate test cases that traverse the GUI, and achieve satisfactory coverage of the application functionalities.

several different approaches and frameworks (e.g., GUITAR) are available in literature for model-based testing of GUI-based applications.

The thesis proposal is about an inspection of the existing literature and an evaluation of a small set of available open-source model-based testing tools for a given tipology of applications (e.g., web or mobile applications), to understand and characterize the principal advantages and difficulties of the approach.

The thesis will be structured as follows:
(i) problem formulation: novel approaches to GUI testing, and model-based testing;
(ii) literature review about model-based testing;
(iii) insights about one or more selected model-based frameworks, and development and maintenance of a test suite on an open-source application.
