Description Freeze drying is widely used to stabilize biopharmaceuticals, but it anyway causes stresses which may be harmful to the protein secondary and tertiary structure. In order to avoid denaturation and/or aggregation phenomena, it is therefore necessary to use suitable protectants, active during both the freezing and drying steps. This thesis project aims to select the best formulation for a biopharmaceutical being freeze dried, thus allowing the highest possible recovery of protein activity. This result will be achieved testing several protectants, mainly sugar-based, and possible combinations of them as well, so as to identify synergistic effects. Both experimental and theoretical projects are available.
