Development of Vertical Slicing Modules for 5G Networks

Reference persons CLAUDIO ETTORE CASETTI, CARLA FABIANA CHIASSERINI

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description Upcoming 5G networks will require to simultaneously support an extremely diverse range of networking and computing requirements to meet the specific needs of vertical industries from sectors such as automotive, entertainment, e-health. This will be realised through a highly-configurable partitioning of the infrastructure across the different verticals or across different operators and service providers, effectively realizing the novel concept of “network slicing” across multiple slice resource providers. In this context, a major role will be played by a “Vertical Slicer”, i.e., an entry point for verticals to define and instantiate their Vertical Service Instances (VSI) from a catalogue of blueprints. Verticals may define pools of resources and priorities to use them for their VSIs. The Vertical Slicer arbitrates resources among VSIs in case of resource shortage in the infrastructure, thereby ensuring that resources are available to high priority services.
Two key components of the Vertical Slicer are:
a Translator module that maps the verticals’ requirements into technical specifications needed by the Service Orchestrator to deploy Virtual Network Functions and Network Services,
an Arbitrator module that decides how to map new vertical services into network service instances, determining the deployment flavours associated with each service, such that the vertical’s QoS requirements are met, while accounting for the services priority level.
The thesis will focus on the realisation of Java modules for the Translator and the Arbitrator of the Vertical Slicer under development in the 5G-Transformer European Project (http://5g-transformer.eu) in the framework of a collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and Nextworks (http://www.nextworks.it).
