Descrizione Space division multiplexing techniques are under investigation as means to increase the traffic capacity of optical networks. Multi-core fibers, constituted by a group of physically separated single-mode cores within the same cladding, and few-mode fibers, which allow for the co-propagation of multiple transmission modes within the same core, have recently been demonstrated. However, due to inter-core/inter-modal crosstalk, a tradeoff emerges between capacity increase and transmission reach decrease. To investigate the impact of such tradeoff, the research activity of this thesis is aimed at the design of optimization models and heuristic algorithms for the routing and spectrum assignment problem in optical networks with multicore/few-mode fibers. Different traffic scenarios (e.g. static vs dynamic traffic) and transmission technologies will be considered and assessed.
