Determination of the final grade
The final grade is assigned by the Graduation  Examining Committee who will assess the overall Average grade of all the exams on a scale of 110.

Calculation of the Average grade for the admission to the Final Examination

The weighted average is calculated only on the credits of graded exams (pass-or-fail exams – i.e.,without a grade -  are excluded from the calculation). The value is calculated as follows:
a) Sum the products given by the grade of each exam multiplied by its credits;
b) Divide a) by the sum of all credits:
(Grade1 x Credits1) + (Grade2 x Credits2) + (Grade n x Credits n)

 (Credits 1 + Credits 2 + Credits n)

The number obtained with this formula is the Average grade expressed on a scale of 30.
In order to obtain the score expressed on a scale of 110:  Average grade expressed on a scale of 30 x 110/30.
Exams passed with honors do not have an impact on the Average grade.
The Average grade is calculated on ALL the graded exams, to the second decimal place; there is no rounding. Such Average grade is transmitted to the Graduation Examining Committee.

Normally the Committee might add to this Average grade up to a maximum of 8 points, taking into consideration:

  • the evaluation of the work carried out for the thesis (dedication, autonomy, methodological rigour, relevance of results, etc.);
  • the thesis oral defence (clarity in presentation, etc.);
  • outstanding results during the academic career (for instance, the number of exams passed with honors, the experiences at foreign universities or research centers, extracurricular activities, participation in student team activities, etc.)

If the candidate reaches the score of 110/110, the Graduation Examining Committee might decide to confer the degree with final honors (cum laude). The decision must be taken by qualified majority (at least 2/3 of the Committee members must vote in favor of awarding the distinction).

If the thesis has got the necessary features, the Graduation  Examining Committee might recommend it for publication (dignità di stampa). This is possible only by unanimous decision of the Committee and only if the final grade is 110 with honors.
