Course attendance and exams
Courses at Politecnico are organized and delivered in two semesters. You can find more information on how courses and other teaching activities are organized in the Chronological calendar and Thematic calendar.
Please check the official course timetables on the Teaching Portal -  Servizi per gli Studenti/Student Services - Orari delle lezioni/Course Timetables w
here Politecnico promptly announces any schedule change.
Course attendance is not compulsory but you are strongly encouraged to attend your classes.  Attending classes is fundamental to acquire the competences needed to achieve the learning objectives of a course. At the end of each course you will be examined to verify if you reached the expected outcomes.
You must wait until a course has been delivered before you can take the exam for the first time. If a course is not included in your Annual Personal Study Plan (APSP) you cannot sit the exam. If you want to take an exam before the course has been delivered, you need to ask for a specific authorization from the Coordinator of your Collegio (this is the case if a course is offered in second semester but you want to take the exam before attending classes in the winter examination session).This is possible only for the courses which are included in your APSP for academic year 2018/19. You need to send your duly justified request through the guided procedure available on  your personal page of the Teaching Portal – Segreteria online – Exams – Exam Schedule and Registration
Exams for courses taught through video lectures can be taken during any examination session no matter which semester the course is delivered on, unless otherwise decided by the faculty member responsible for the course. In any case you must always check the course syllabus to find out about the course contents, structure and assessment criteria.
The exam dates for each course are decided by the Exam Advisors of your Department. You can check the exam dates on your personal page of the Teaching Portal - Servizi per gli Studenti/Student Services  - Appelli d’esame/Examination dates.
When two exam dates are scheduled for a course during the same examination session, you are allowed to take the exam on both dates, even if you fail your exam at first attempt.
To register for an exam date, you are required to follow the online procedure available on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. Exam registration is computerized.
You must always be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member of the course  which you are registered on (you are not allowed to take your exam with a different board of examiners).
For courses regularly offered during a.y. 2018/19:  you must be examined by the board of examiners chaired by the faculty member responsible for teaching that specific course in a.y. 2018/19.
For courses attended in previous years (already included in your past Annual Personal Study Plan): you must be examined by the faculty member who is responsible for the course in a.y. 2018/2019.  You can check this information on your personal page of the Teaching Portal.
When more than one faculty member teaches the same subject, you must be examined by the faculty member who taught your course. Students are assigned to a certain faculty member based on specific criteria (alphabetical order, course choice, belonging to a certain degree programme, etc...). *
As long as a course is still being offered at Politecnico, you can take the exam until the last academic year of course delivery. When a course is discontinued, you can take the exam until the last examination session of the previous year (September). After this date, if you still have not passed the exam, you must replace it with a new course which is still on the course catalogue. The Collegio of your degree programme will provide guidance on this issue.
* UPDATE of 18/07/2018
For courses already included in your past Annual Personal Study Plan: you must be examined by the faculty member who taught your course (docente titolare) when you attended it for the first time. You can check this information on your personal page of the Teaching Portal. If this faculty member is no longer teaching this course, you will be assigned to another faculty member.
