PERIOD: SEPTEMBER Innovative research in the field of thermal fluid dynamics and energetics needs a deep knowledge of measurement systems in heat and mass transfer. Mechanical, thermal and chemical measuring systems are the background in experimental and theoretical research. Doctoral students and researchers need to know how to monitor and control industrial or research apparatus, how to estimate accuracy in experimental research, how to compare theoretical and experimental data. The course aims to provide concepts, instruments and methodologies typical of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, with a focus on the comparison between theoretical and experimental data. Furthermore, the course will provide real measurement experiences at the lab level, with participation to experimental sessions through and the direct use of measurement instruments (calibration, measurement, analysis of the error).

Part I: Introduction/generalities - Applications of measurement instrumentation in heat and mass transfer research, experimental engineering analysis. Functional element of an instrument; static and dynamic performance of instruments; accuracy, precision, bias. Measuring devices: motion, force, pressure, temperature, velocity and flow, thermal radiation. - Special instrumentation systems in two phase flow applications. - New trends in the development of measuring systems in innovative energetic apparatus. Part II: (IN.TE.S.E. Laboratory) Description of principles, methodologies, processes and devices, experimental tests on: • Electrochemical polarization and impedance (application to fuel cells, electrolyzers) • TPO (temperature programmed oxidation) and TPR (temperature programmed reduction/reaction) (application to reforming and methanation, phenomena of carbon deposition) • Gas analysis through mass spectrometer (application to gas mixtures with components in traces) Part III: (Internal combustion engines Laboratory) Description of principles, methodologies, and devices to be applied in this field, such as indicating analysis and pollutant emissions analysis.

Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
