The internship is an opportunity to gain temporary work experience and on-the-job training before entering the labour market without onset of employment relationship. The internship is an educational activity aimed at completing university education, which allows students to get in a work environment, coming in contact with the organization, logic and business dynamics of companies. The internship allows students to develop the ability to operate independently and, at the same time, to work effectively in workgroups in a professional environment, acquiring appropriate technical language and interpersonal skills. Furthermore, the internship experience lets the student to evaluate competencies acquired during the studies and to strengthen his/her abilities to update knowledge and to adapt to professional jobs.
Detailed information about the internship program can be found in the STUDENT GUIDE, under the INTERNSHIP section, for the current academic year.
The 6 CFU internship, equivalent to 150 hours, can take place both in companies and in public/private organizations as well as at Politecnico and in other universities. You can do your internship both in Italy or abroad. In order to include the internship in your Annual Personal Study Plan, you must have earned at least 48 CFU. The internship can be carried out in any period of the academic year. The inclusion of the internship in your Study Plan has to be authorised by the Internship Coordinator of in charge of your degree programme. Initially you need to include an optional course (Free ECTS credits) in your PSP. Later, after earning the required number of credits, you will request the replacement of the optional course with the internship to the Internship Coordinator. You are allowed to replace an optional course (6 CFU - Free ECTS credits ) with a 6 CFU internship. The requirements to request the inclusion of the internship in your study plan are the following: you must have earned the required number of credits and you must have already contacted the host company; you must ask the host company to send an e-mail to the Internship Coordinator of your degree programme specifying their availability to host you as an intern and the scheduled period; you must identify an Academic Tutor among Politecnico Faculty; you must send an e-mail to the Internship Coordinator of your degree programme specifying the code and the title of the optional course (Free ECTS credits 3rd year) to be replaced and the code of the internship that you wish to start. If your study plan includes a compulsory internship, before you start the internship, you must request the authorization to activate the internship by sending an e-mail to the Internship Coordinator of your degree programme specifying the code of the internship, the host company and the scheduled period.
You can find the instructions about the platform that you need to use to upload your internship project and to report the internship progress till its completion at: https://www.polito.it/en/education/applying-studying-graduating/internships-and-thesis/curricular-internships-in-italy https://www.polito.it/en/education/applying-studying-graduating/internships-and-thesis/curricular-internship-abroad At the end of the internship you must upload a short report (maximum 10 pages) to the platform. The final validation of the internship and its registration in your transcript of records will be done by your Academic Tutor. Extending the duration of your internship: internships have a given duration (hours) and provide a certain number of credits as specified in the Annual Personal Study Plan. You can extend the duration of your internship (number of hours) by selecting one of the options available in the field “Expected no. of hours”. You can only do this operation before the beginning of your internship and not while you are doing it. In any case, you cannot do more than 900 hours (maximum amount of hours may vary for each study course). Any request to extend the duration of an internship must be decided together with the Host Company. It MUST also be approved by a Polito faculty member (your Academic Tutor or the Internship Coordinator for your degree programme) who may reject your proposal. In this case, you need to make a new proposal and fill out a new Progetto Formativo. If your Progetto Formativo is approved, it means that the extension of your internship and the extra hours have been accepted too. At the end of an internship with extended duration, you will see that the internship is recorded in your transcript as follows: INTERNSHIP with standard hours/credits in accordance with the rules of your degree programme (i.e. 6 credits/150 hours) plus the annotation “curricular internship extension” with your extra hours/credits. These credits will be recorded in your transcript as credit overload (they do not count towards the 120-credits threshold required for Master’s graduation). Internship Coordinator: Prof. Stefano PASTORELLI (stefano.pastorelli@polito.it) *** You are not allowed to obtain the recognition of activities that you have already carried out. The internship is considered as an activity formulated from scratch. However, you are allowed to request the recognition of professional skills in substitution for your free choice credits. Please follow the procedure explained in the "Student Guide": free choice credits ---> other learning activities ---> other learning activities outside the University.
