Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
Description The idea is to equip blind or visually impaired people with wearable haptic devices that help them in the practice of a sport (eg, climbing, running, swimming). The wearable device must be equipped with sensors to detect the position of the guided limb (e.g., to understand when the climber's hand is close to a certain grip) and provide tactile feedback (e.g .: a sequence of vibrations) that gives indications to the athlete (e.g. distance from the right grip, height reached, running or swimming pace to follow, etc.)
This thesis is in collaboration with the SIRSLab of the University of Siena (http://sirslab.dii.unisi.it/), directed by Prof. Domenico Prattichizzo, and with the Italian Institute of Technology, Genova.
The student will learn to choose the suitable components to build wearable devices, looking for a compromise between the desired performance and the size and weight of the final interface. He/she will also be able to better understand the potential of wearable haptic interfaces and will learn how to set up user studies to evaluate new devices
Notes A visiting period at the SIRSLab in Siena or at the IIT in Genova may be required, depending on the evolution of the thesis work and on the pandemic situation.
