Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
Description The thesis is in collaboration with the SIRSLab of the University of Siena (http://sirslab.diism.unisi.it/), directed by Prof. Domenico Prattichizzo, and with the Italian Institute of Technology.
The aim of the thesis is to create a system to recognize FOG episodes in subjects suffering from Parkinson's disease. The system should be worn on an anklet and may use an external processing system (PC or smartphone) for identification.
The subject's gait can be monitored using inertial sensors (accelerometers) or piezoelectric sensors. The student will develop an algorithm to recognize the FOG event by analyzing the subject's walking data.
The student will learn to choose the suitable components to build wearable devices, looking for a compromise between the desired performance and the size and weight of the final interface. The student will also deal with the development of an algorithm for real-time data analysis to identify the freezing episode.
Notes A visiting period at the University of Siena or at the Italian Institute of Technology may be required, depending on the thesis activities and on the pandemic situation.
