Description About 10% of emergency room visits are due to people with hydration problems. Assessment of their volume status is essential for planning and monitoring the effects of fluid therapy, which involves administering or withdrawing fluids to dehydrated or hypervolemic patients, respectively. Assessing the tolerability of administering fluids is a very important clinical problem, because the balance must be found between maintaining cardiac output and the risk of heart overload. Recently, a technology based on the measurement of the pulse wave velocity in the veins has been proposed and patented, which has been shown to be sensitive to changes in blood volume induced in healthy subjects by passive leg raising. A compression system is used to generate a pressure wave and a Doppler ultrasound system has been used to detect the passage of the wave at a certain distance from the compression zone. Our objective is now to develop a simpler and cheaper device for detecting the pulse wave. The aim of the thesis is to design an experimental protocol that allows to obtain a reliable measurement of the pulse wave velocity. In particular, it is necessary to select the most appropriate vein, arrange some innovative (recently developed) tonometers and evaluate their effectiveness in identifying the passage of the pulse wave. Finally, it is required to develop an algorithm that processes the data to estimate the wave velocity.
Required skills Basic knowledge of electronics, Matlab programming and statistical analysis. Interest in biomedical experimental measurements.
