Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL
Description This thesis work involves the design, synthesis and physical, thermo-mechanical, optical and spectroscopic characterization of phosphate glasses doped with Pr3 + ions and of passive glasses with compositions similar to those of active glasses to be used respectively as core and cladding of an optical fiber. Once the glasses necessary for the realization of the desired optical fiber will be obtained and their compatibility verified both from a thermo-mechanical and optical point of view, the work will proceed with the realization and subsequent polishing with optical quality of the preforms (active phosphate glass rod, passive phosphate glass tube) from which the optical fiber will later be obtained by means of a drawing process. The preform of the optical fiber will be assembled with the rod-in-tube technique, and the optical fiber obtained will be examined by optical microscopy and optical reflectometry in the time domain and finally fully characterized.
Required skills Basic knowledge of glasses, optical fibers and the principle of operation of lasers. Ability to process experimental data using commonly used softwares (Excel and/or Matlab).
