Description Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for approximately 17.9 million deaths per year or 32% of total annual deaths. Early diagnosis and treatment of CVD can drastically reduce the likelihood of premature mortality and ensure a normal life for those strongly related to Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV). Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) represents the speed of pressure wave propagation within arteries, and is usually assessed between the carotid and femoral sites. Specifically, it is calculated as the ratio of the distance between the two sites to the time elapsed to travel that length. PWV estimation is performed with instruments based mainly on applanation tonometry, but the high cost severely limits their use in the clinical setting.
This thesis aims to develop a non-invasive, low-cost and reliable device for the estimation of radio-tibial PWV and its correlation with traditional carotid-femoral. This study's challenge is using commercial force sensors as sensing elements to detect pulse wave propagation in sites not usually used for this purpose.
The first part of the thesis will focus on engineering sensors and electronics for the new sites considered. Secondly, the acquisition and processing of the signals will be continued. Moreover, finally, the prototype will be validated in a hospital environment in collaboration with the "A.O.U. Cittą della Salute e della Scienza" hospital in Turin.
