Description Stress and cognitive load are conditions that alter our cognitive and emotional processes, hindering decision-making in many situations in our daily lives. Our body is sensitive to such conditions and, in fact, various physiological signals such as brain oxygenation (fNIRS signal - Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) and respiration contain within them important information regarding stress and cognitive load.
The proposed thesis work will be structured as follows:
1) The candidate will be asked to perform a state-of-the-art analysis regarding the relationship between respiration, the fNIRS signal with the variation of stress and cognitive load.
2) Subsequently, the candidate should conduct experimental tests using the multi-channel acquisition equipment in our laboratory to evaluate the variation of the two aforementioned signals with the variation of stress and cognitive load.
3) The data obtained shall be processed in such a way as to extrapolate from these signals the most significant features identified previously;
4) Finally, the candidate must assess the cross-correlation of these features with the variation in stress and cognitive load.
This process will allow the candidate to demonstrate the correlation between parameters related to brain oxygenation, respiration, and the variation of a stress condition and cognitive load, using state-of-the-art biomedical signal acquisition technologies.

Required skills Biomedical signal processing, programming in Matlab
