Description The heat losses from the receivers of modular CSP plants with central tower are hardly measured, especially since wind and air temperature conditions are subject to wide variations during the operation of the plants. At the same time, a careful estimation of the losses is necessary to accurately assess the receiver and plant performance/efficiency. Correlations for the losses can be derived based on a dataset of Computational thermal-Fluid-Dynamic (CFD) simulations, where the wind direction and strength, as well as the ambient and receiver temperatures, are varied to cover all the possible conditions relevant for the plant. Aim of the thesis is to perform, for a relevant and sufficiently general receiver geometry, the CFD simulations for the minimum set of air and wind conditions that could affect the losses, and to developed, based on the numerical dataset, a dimensionless correlation for the heat transfer coefficient, to compute the losses from the receiver.
