Bio-fluid mechanics & computational fluid mechanics for sport
The module BioFluid Mechanics for Sport aims to provide students with methodologies needed for the comprehension of fluid mechanics. The definition, starting from conservation laws, of the governing equations of motion of fluids is a mandatory step to better understand and describe the basic aerodynamic and hydrodynamic principles that govern most sports. Once introduced, basic fluid mechanics concept are discussed and applied to a wide variety of individual sports, from the planning of a surfboard through water to sports balls, from swimming to snowboarding.
The module Computational Fluid Mechanics for Sport aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge for the numerical analysis of the fluid mechanics of bodies immersed in air and water. An overview on finite difference methods will be given together with consistency, stability and convergence concepts. Through a series of case studies applied to sports disciplines, the student will be able to understand the different flow and boundary layer regimes, the flow vorticity problems, the most suitable computational models for each application, as well as the advantages and limitations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. Possible examples of application will be focused on standard and recumbent cycling, and sport boats.
